Summer is the season for fun, but, unfortunately, it is also prime time for contractors who perform services without a license or the proper insurance coverage. These fake contractors may do a shoddy job, or, worse, cost you thousands in lawsuits and claims if workers are injured on your property.
Recent headlines emphasize this point. Eleven individuals are now facing misdemeanor charges for illegal advertising for failure to state in their ads that they are not licensed. The penalties for this crime include fines of between $700 and $1,000, which may be small compared to the damage they inflict on the homeowner. Another contractor was cited for asking for more than 10 percent or $1,000 as a down payment for home improvement work. This law is designed to protect consumers from “fly-by-night” outfits that pocket a large deposit then disappear.
It certainly seems that unscrupulous and dishonest contractors are on the prowl for unwary homeowners. How can you identify fake contractors and protect yourself and your property from harm? Fortunately, there are several easy steps you can take.
Refuse to hire anyone without proper credentials. The simplest step you can take is to insist on licensed, bonded individuals or companies to do work on your home. According to the California State Licensing Board, you can perform an Instant License Check on their website, searching by individual or business name or by license number. You can also find bonding and insurance information on this page.
Get multiple bids. You should always have a goal of getting three bids before you have any work performed on your home or yard. You may find that one company offers more options or better service, even if they do not have the lowest price If you are not sure where to find licensed contractors, the California State Licensing Board offers a free feature called “Find My Licensed Contractor” that allows you to search for contractors in your geographical area. The CSLB also offers licensing workshops for contractors interested in becoming licensed by the state.
Ask for references. There is nothing wrong with asking for the names and numbers or emails of a few satisfied customers. Good, honest contractors are happy to provide you with references for completed work. Checking these references will give you a chance to talk to other homeowners who can help you gauge the reliability of the contractor and how well he or she completes jobs. You should ask the references how satisfied they are with the quality, time and effort put into the project, and for specific reasons they recommend the contractor.
Don’t be lured by low prices. Many disreputable contractors try to lure customers with “too-good-to-be-true” offers. Remember, if it seems impossible that someone could do the amount of work for the price quoted, it is a red flag.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
