Few will be shocked to learn that Southern California is considered by many to have a desert climate. While we do have very little rainfall throughout the year, the nearby Pacific triggers mild winters and very warm summers – very much akin to a tropical environment.
Because of such conditions, choosing the best plants for your landscape can be a bit of a chore.
With this article, we share some of the plants that are most ideal for landscaping in San Diego.
Also commonly referred to as sages, these perennials and shrubs are drought tolerant and easy to grow. Most of them will bloom profusely, adding lots of color to your gardens and yards. Because they thrive in a host of different types of soils and climates, they’re quite a versatile addition.
San Diego Red Bougainvillea – also known as Scarlett O’Hara or Hawaiian Scarlet
This vine really brings the “wow factor” to just about any fence and border.
Because of their drought-resistant and evergreen characteristics, this vine thrives in San Diego climates and is best left alone, able to grow freely in your backyard.
This bright, sun-loving ground cover plant produces flowers by the bushel. They’re easy to care far and require only occasional trimming.
Desert Museum palo verde
Also known as a “desert museum,” this shade tree produces an extraordinarily stunning large yellow canopy. The green trunks and branches are uniquely shaped for producing filtered shade underneath.
Also known as “Swan Hill,” this beautiful tree can grow between 25’-30’. Because of a deformity, these trees are fruitless, which means less pollen. The foliage reminds many of willow trees.
