Attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies With Native Plants
Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 29 July , 2015
If you want to fill your garden with beautiful hummingbirds or butterflies, it is easy to do so with plants native to the San Diego area. Flowering plants provide pollen and nectar for these creatures, so it is easy to get them to visit your yard by planning your garden with their needs in mind.
Here are a few plants that may help you welcome beautiful butterflies and delicate hummingbirds to your garden and that grow well in San Diego climates.
Ian Bush, Archtostaphylos. The Ian Bush comes in several varieties and is a beautiful five-foot manzanita that works well in yards in the western part of San Diego County. This bush attracts hummingbirds with its lovely pink clusters of blossoms that hang like bells. Foliage is evergreen, but do not overwater; in fact, it is usually better to water in February rather than in the summer months as this plant tolerates dry clay better than wet soil.
Narrowleaf Milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis. This butterfly magnet has narrow leaves and tight, white buds that cluster at the ends of the stalks and attract winged friends. Milkweed is poisonous to certain animals such as cattle, so placement should be considered carefully.
California Buckeye, Aesculus californica. This small tree grows to 15 feet and is a real California native, with showy six-inch flowering spikes that appear from April to May. The interesting thing about the California Buckeye is that native bees and butterflies thrive on its blossoms, but those same flowers are poisonous to non-native species. The controlled planting of Buckeye can help to keep out invasive species.
Butterfly Mint Bush, Monardella antonina. This beautiful perennial has purple bursts of flowers that attract tons of butterflies. Standing only one foot tall, this little bush is a great addition to any area of a San Diego Garden where you want lots of butterfly activity. It is not unusual to see two to three butterflies per blossom on this plant during the height of its bloom between July and December.
Green Monardella, Monardella viridis. This lovely plant boasts a slender-petaled purple blossom atop a green bud bed and a thin stalk. This combination causes the flowers to leap out visually. Blooming in early summer, this hardy plant tolerates dry conditions and clay and is great for attracting both birds and butterflies.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
