April One Of Best Months for San Diego Gardens

In some parts of the country, April is a whimsical month that dares gardeners to put their tender plants in the ground at the risk of a late frost. Fortunately, for San Diego gardeners, this is not a problem! A little work at the beginning of April will reward you with glorious blooms and a beautiful garden for the rest of the spring.

As the temperatures continue to climb and days lengthen, there is plenty of work to be done in the garden. Here are some jobs you should not neglect this month if you want the rest of the spring and summer to go well:

  • Add new plants to your garden. If you put in bedding plants last year and noticed some “holes” or bare spots, now is the time to correct that problem. Trim back your plants and incorporate some new ones to fill out empty spaces.
  • Pay attention to annuals. Not all bulbs are perennials; some, such as tulips or hyacinths, should be removed after they bloom. If you have other annual plants that have died, replace them at this time. If you prefer a low-maintenance yard, consider replacing certain annuals with perennials.
  • Become a “deadheader.” You do not have to love the Grateful Dead to appreciate the power of Deadheading! This term refers to pinching off spent flowers to allow the plant’s energy to go into making new blooms. It is a good practice to begin if you want full, lush foliage that lasts for weeks.
  • Monitor irrigation. With the recent drought, it has become more important than ever to monitor your water use. Never irrigate when it rains, as this can not only waste water but cause your plants to become too saturated, leading to root issues.
  • Fertilize. Use the right fertilizer for the right job. Some fertilizers are specifically designed for certain types of plants while others are more general. It is also important to apply fertilizer in the right way. Some product are meant to be broadcast while others are meant to be isolated near the roots.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
