Adding Zoned Areas To Your Landscaping Plan

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Thursday, 22 June , 2023

Zoning your landscaping is a great way to make the most of any space that you have available.  Even a very small yard can become functional and enjoyable if it is zoned properly.  A good landscape designer can help you determine what zones you need to create a beautiful and useful space that your family will utilize with maximum efficiency and one that can adapt as your needs change.

How Landscape Zoning Works

Landscape zoning is simply dividing outdoor spaces into areas marked by some visible or invisible boundary and designated for a particular use.  For example, your yard might contain zones for outdoor eating and entertaining; gardening and food production; flower bedding; children’s play areas; and pet areas.  Each of these areas might be delineated by fencing, walls, bedding, or some other marker, or they might simply flow into each other naturally.  The point of zoning is that each area of your yard has a job to do, and the landscaping elements you choose will reflect that job and work toward functionality.

A typical yard usually includes at least three landscape zones:

  • One or more planting zones. Whether you choose drought-resistant plants or full grassy areas, at least some of your yard will probably be dedicated to plants.  Plants may be placed in well-defined beds sculpted with borders of stone or brick, or they may be in loose, flowing beds that merge into the rest of your yard in a more natural and easygoing way.  They may also be standalone, as with single trees or shrubs.  Some planting areas may be designated for food crops; often, simple container gardens on a patio or porch can produce edible herbs, vegetables, and fruits in amazing quantities.
  • Play and recreation areas. Most yards have at least one zone dedicated to play and recreation.  This might include a children’s play set, a pool, or an outdoor kitchen.  What you put in your play and recreation areas depends largely on your family and your particular likes and needs.  Recreation areas should always be planned with safety in mind as well as enjoyment.
  • Utility areas. Some parts of your yard may be working areas that are zoned to help you manage the rest of your outdoor spaces.  For example, irrigation systems, lighting, and other utilities need space for their power supplies and other functions.  Zoning an area for this purpose helps you spare the rest of your yard for other uses.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
