Adding Fire and Water Features to an Existing Landscape

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Thursday, 8 June , 2023

One way to give your landscape instant impact is to add fire or water features–or both!  Fire and water are natural elements that quickly elevate your landscape from boring to exciting, and make your outdoor space more enjoyable for you, your family, and your friends.

Landscape Considerations for Fire and Water Features

While fire and water features are great additions to any landscape, there are certain factors you must take into consideration when you are adding these things to your outdoor spaces.  Some things to think about include:

  • All land has some type of slope, and when you are considering water features, this is an important thing to think about.  Slope refers to how your land moves “downhill” and is calculated based on downward movement per linear foot.  For example, a yard that dropped 1 foot over a length of 50 feet would have a particular degree slope that could be calculated from those measurements.  A yard that dropped 2 feet over the same length would have a steeper slope.  Water runs downhill, so the steeper your yard’s slope, the faster water will run downhill.  This is important when considering runoff from water features and rainfall.  If your yard has a steep slope, you may have to make adjustments to accommodate runoff.
  • In order to have a water feature, you must have water piped to your fountain, pool, waterfall or other feature.  This involves irrigation pipes, and may involve a pump if gravity alone is not enough to draw water to your features.  Using a low-flow or gravity-based system is best and costs least, so it is important to understand not only the lay of your land but also whether these types of systems are an option for you.  If not, you should be aware of options for irrigation pumps such as solar that may be more environmentally friendly.
  • Gas or fuel. A fire feature runs on fuel, and that fuel is most often propane, although natural gas is another good choice if it is available in your area.  Whatever your fuel system, it is important to think about how the fuel supply will get to your fire feature.  Safety is always a primary concern, as well as cost-effectiveness.  A good landscape designer can help you choose your fire feature based on the type of fuel you have available and the type of effect you want to create.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
