Watching Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold put up lights around his home in National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation” is a holiday ritual for many people. In this article, we’ll teach you how not to be like Clark when putting up your lights and decorations.
Plan your holiday lighting design. Even the most creative among us should stay away from “winging it” when it comes to holiday decorating. Developing an overall game plan before you start is the way to go.
Establish a focal point. When passersby see your house, it’s best to give their eyes a starting point. Without it, all of your hard work will resemble little more than a blog of lights.
Measure before hanging up lights. Some of the most popular outdoor spots for hanging lights include:
Along the rooflines
Around door frames, windows and other architectural features of your home
On top of hedges, bushes and trees
Before you hang the first strand, measure the length – including the distance to your power source. This should give you a good idea of how many strands of light you’ll need.
A good reference to follow is 100 lights for every 1 ½ foot of shrub or tree that you want to cover. That means that a 6-ft. tree will need about 400 lights for the basic level of lighting.
Test your lights on the ground before putting them into position. Even if the lights are new, it’s best to find out if they’re not working while on the ground rather than when after you’ve put them in place.
Use an all-purpose light clip to attach the lights to your gutters. If you do not have gutters, you can flip the clip around and attach the lights to your shingles.
To attach lights to railings, deck clips tend to work best.
Install a timer for your lights. With a timer, you don’t have to worry about faulty memories to remember to turn the lights off at nighttime.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic.
