Best Tips for San Diego Lawn Care

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 2 December , 2015

San Diego’s beautiful scenery and perfect weather make it one of the best places in the country to live.   However, although it is easy to grow many beautiful plants and lush, luxurious lawns in this part of the country, it still does not happen by accident.  It is important to take the right steps to grow and care for your San Diego lawn, such as:

  • Understand your soil. The first thing you must have in order to support a healthy lawn is good soil.  You can buy a $20 kit that will allow you to test your own soil or ask Juniper Landscape to do it for you!  Your test results will determine the pH level of your soil.  If it is not neutral, we can add phosphorous, nitrogen or other elements to bring your soil into the proper balance.
  • Check your drainage. Much of southern California dirt is dense and clay-like, so it is not ideal for draining water.  This can lead to good growth, as the soil tends to retain moisture, but it can also lead to oversaturation, particularly if you water too frequently.  Before setting up a watering schedule, it is important for you to know the consistency of your soil.
  • Choose the right grass. Not all grass is created equal.  A tall fescue requires little water and thrives in the sun, although it is not as resistant to foot traffic as other species.  Conversely, some hardy grass species that look beautifully green are not drought-tolerant.  Be sure you understand the pros and cons of each type of grass before choosing one that works well with your lifestyle.
  • Fertilize and water properly. It is generally a good plan to fertilize in the spring and fall and to water once a week in the early morning.  However, different species of grass have different water needs, so be sure you are not over- or under-watering.  You should also weed frequently if you notice intrusive species and take into account how you will manage pests, from insects to rabbits.
  • Mow at the right time. You should not mow your lawn once a week simply because it is on your schedule.  Your lawn actually tells you when to mow!  The general rule is to cut no more than one-third of the height of the grass, so if your grass is healthiest at three inches, you should cut only when it reaches four or more inches in height.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
